I read the Steam thread, but I couldn't think of any causes or possible solutions.
I'm glad you managed to resolve it on your own though!

It's an early implementation. There's plenty of room to fine-tune it, so calling it powercreep already is a bit premature. Playabot, you don't define what GRIP is or should be. I also fail to see why you're so opposed to a 6-wheeler, whilst suggesting a 2-wheeler in the same post.

UI is all about (managing) user expectation and ease of navigation.
