I also wanted to point out how awesome this kind of power-up would be on tracks like the Training Track or Daytona with lots of steep hills. You would be able to speed over them as fast as you want while everyone else is flying trough the air or slowing down.

What would be the reasoning for weapons in arena mode doing more damage though? If it's the same weapons some people will be pissed that their driller has been 'nerfed'. Especially if some people are exposed to or play arena mode first, which isn't impossible.

I liked the way tires automatically switched in RC1. On city tracks you had slick racing tires, snow tracks had big treaded tires. So maybe that could be a compromise.
