Steam will it be mandatory ?

Postby James_Cooper » Sun Aug 16, 2015 11:04 am

Hi people,

I really want to participate in the Kickstarter fund raising, but I want to play that game on a offline and low ressource laptop, so Steam will it be mandatory ?

thx

Steam's actually alright when it comes to playing games offline i've found though i've heard all kinds of people say all kinds of things so i'd like to know as well if the game's utilising steamworks or such, i'd like to see it on GOG and such but if there's going to be a multiplayer then steamworks is generally the most painless way to do it.

In the Kickstarter, it says in one of the tiers what you get as a reward is a "DRM-free" copy of the game, so that means you can play it offline and not attached to Steam. I'm not sure if that is just for Kickstarter people, and if both versions (Digital and Physical) copies get this advantage, so it's confusing, but it seems can play it offline like you want with the DRM-Free copy.

The digital PC copy of GRIP is on Steam. But you can easily go into offline mode on Steam and play all you want.

TOSSMEH (lol @ name) is right, steamworks is the easiest most painless way for this to be distributed while keeping a proper friends list.

We haven't looked too far into DRM-free version, but it's possible down the line

I would love to see a DRM free version and more than that a gog.com release. You may want to look at their galaxy platform. They don't do the early access stuff, but I think a quick look at http://www.gog.com/indie might be a good idea.

Its always harder to figure out ways around things down the line then to at least have an eye for them now.

I don't see why we can't have a DRM-free version, it's been nothing but positive for many titles, including the recent Witcher 3.

I'll have to discuss this with our Producer, David.

Hi,

I love the Rollcage-style racing, but I hate DRM.

I will not buy Steam stuff anymore, so please free those poor little DRMs... :/

edit : I voted for you on Steam Greenlight, but that was only because I couldn't donate !

cheers

The problem is that they don't have a choice at all, as far as i can tell, if they want to keep their independency.

If they had enough money, they would not need Steam Early Access in the first case.
Which could have been the case if the Kickstarter had succeeded.

It's already great they have enough to go on Early Access.
Maybe one day they will have plenty of money due to the success of GRIP, and then they will be able to afford freeing the DRM, who knows ? ;)

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I've seen this kickstarter, but I wish I saw it earlier.

What about offering a version of a game with less features first ?

But I can understand people want a complete game at the first play.

I truly hope they will remove the DRM, but I haven't seen this very often.. :/
I've been surprised that ubi-soft released drm-free assassin's creed and rayman origins, but I'm still disappointed that games like "hidden in plain sight", "nidhogg", "don't starve together" never lost their DRM, so I'm not very confident about upcoming games.

This is exactly what Early Access is about :D
Giving people a version of a game with less features first, so that they can afterwards update it continuously until it is sufficiently polished to exit the "Early Access" state.

By the way, after reading some pages about DRM, it seems that I have messed up DRM and Early Access.

But I doubt the developers can have a DRM-free version as long as they are in Early Access state.
