Will it have potato support?

Postby Moo » Mon Sep 07, 2015 5:26 pm

My laptop is quite shite at playing some newer games, and I'm concerned that since this will run on UE4 I'll have to miss out. Any info?

similar discussion already runs here:
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=161

however, I think that haswell generation intel HD graphics may be able to run the game, thanks to UE4 scaleability.

Baked and served with a pickle (mouse) and a slice of ham (keyboard), with a crappy CRT hooked to it. Graphics card is a slice of butter.

I want numbers  or at least which games you are able to run with your PC

Okaaay, here's my specs:

Code: Select all

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU B940 @ 2.00GHz
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 315M
Memory: 4.1 GB
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1

Yeah, I'm not expecting to run GRIP with this.

The guy who uploaded the video is running the game on sandy bridge i5 and 8GB RAM, so go figure.
GTA V is running on updated version of an engine they were using even on Wii back in 2006. UE4 is a slightly different beast.
I think that Grip may run on your machine, but barely.
I am worried if it'll run nicely on my i5 3470, 16GB RAM, ATI HD 7750 :D

But that is twice the RAM and a better processor...

OK for the RAM, since I've heard that GTA V is quite demanding on that.

But for the processor, do you really think it matters ?
It's the GPU that does 99% of the computation in a video game, not the processor.

Video card : main component in a gaming PC. It's the GPU who does the computation in a video game.

Processor : Always nice to have a more than 2 GHz one, but for game it's not that useful. Though, it matters if you record encoded videos (encoding/decoding requires a lot of CPU), or if you run some special algorithms. I always remember how i had a single core 1 GHz PC who was running Freespace a lot more smoothly than my dual core 2 GHz laptop, simply because my PC had a graphic card.

RAM : Just as long as you have more than what is required, it's fine. Having more RAM does not increase the speed. But having not enough RAM decreases speed a lot. Formula Fusion is badly optimized and it doesn't take more than 1 GB on my computer, and Windows 7 does not take more than 1.5 GB as far as i can remember, so you're definitely large in RAM

Or at least in theory

To be completely honest, Moo, I think it's time for an upgrade.

Could anyone explain to me what is wrong exactly with Moo's setup ?
I'm pretty much sure that he can run Formula Fusion at lowest settings and get maybe 30 FPS with it.

I mean, see it this way : I have a 830M which is roughly two times faster than his video card
And I can easily run Formula Fusion at lowest settings at 60 FPS.

I believe most devs today are targeting quad core cpu, dedicated graphics and 8gb ram.

Maybe Moo can run Formula Fusion at 20-30fps, but I'm fairly certain GRIP will be way more demanding with it's more open track layout, destruction and particle effects.
That thing is weaker than modern integrated graphics of AMD/Intel chips, man. Having his setup as a development target would be beyond stupid too; you can create low-poly versions of everything, but at a certain point you're running PS1-quality models without any shaders and the game would still run like sh*t, because the CPU can't keep up with the physics calculations (unless Rob absolutely bastardizes the thing, which I doubt he'll agree to).

Hmm I don't know.. I'm still dubitative. I guess Moo will have to tell us if he can run GRIP on his potato :P
