Start Boost idea

I've come up with the idea for start boost.

-When the count down starts, pressing hand-brake button (usually space) while pressing acceleration key (usually w or forward key) will make the cars burn rubber, this will make them "prepare" for the starting boost.

-the faster you mash the acceleration button the speed-o-meter will rise, and when count down ends, race begin and the turbines of the cars fire in blue color with strong explosion sound (stronger depending on the power) and the wheels that were "burning rubber" catch the "GRIP" ;) and off they go.

So to sum it up, that would be a "faster you mash the acceleration button, the faster you go".
I'm not a fan of the games where you have to mash something the fastest possible. I'm too lazy for that :P

And also, it's very easy to make a soft that would mash the button for you.
Players could use something like that to have the maximum speed automatically, and it would be hard to detect this as cheating if the soft is done right.

Infinite W mash + space macro here we come. To make this something that you can't just macro, you need to randomize the keys required or maybe even add a visual slider that requires you to hover an indicater at a randomly generated spot on the bar once the countdown hits zero to get a boost bonus - sort of like simulating a rev meter where every car has a sweet spot for it's boost.

soft can be done in any game not only grip. the button mashing could of course differ depending on the weight of the car, acceleration, wheels, and it doesnt need to be a button mashing straight out of "Asura's wrath" :D. NFS Pro street had the burning rubber feature in drag modes and it wasnt a bad thing.

maybe hand-brake could make a sliding line on Speedometer and acceleration button would need to stay inside the line made of hand-brake to "fill up" the power for starting boost

Or maybe a rev counter that has a sweet spot indicated.
The closer you get to the sweet spot, the longer your boost!
For the optimal start, you would either need to time the gas right or hold the analog control right on the dime.

Else I want the standard rollcage launch.

standard rollcage boost is boring :D We're trying to make it awesome.

also, how the cars get such boost on start? because in rollcage they're moving fast in a blink without really knowing how. "..burning rubber.." and "..explosion sound..", "..catching grip..", blue flames from turbines etc. I'm trying to explain it to make it "realistic" on its own

I meant realistic in its own world. not just plain "boom" and we're driving 500km somehow :P

about the rubber burning, I meant it as when the car starts moving due to the boost force wheels will catch the ground and start moving with the car, nothing about acceleration :|

Just remember everyone, it will be an arcade racer, not a sim.
We can get away with a few things that are unlogical.

You complain about a sudden burst of speed at the start being unlogical, but don't object to these heavy things sticking to surfaces upside down? Or the ENTIRE flipping over thing and just continueing to drive?

Also, I don't want to button mash and like to keep it simple.

strong downforce can explain those cars sticking to walls/ceilings (I think) but the sudden boost like if a big hammer punched the car in the back cant be explained. I don't need expert explanations as you mentioned its not a simulator. but at least something, understand ?

Doesn't need to be a button masher, can be something similar just to make the start varying more then in rollcage

that means not just one click and players gains max speed

either have the classic RC system or like F-Zero Maximum Velocity.
in F-Zero MV every car had a "sweet spot" when you had to hold acc. to get a boost start.
some of the fatter vehicles required you to acc. at 3 sec before start, some at 1.2 seconds before start.

seriously mashing buttons is some of the worst design thing happedn to videogames and i really really dont want to do this stuff before every race, it will just get tiresome.

Imagine a racing night like what we do in the steam group with rollcage.
Sometimes we play for 5 hours straight, only taking breaks for relief or food.
Now introduce mashing for a boost launch... (ouch)
Cramped fingers/arms, sore muscles the next day... It won't be pretty...

And it needs to be simple... Like giving a clue how to do more complex launches or keeping a really easy launch like in rollcage...
If you want to remove the "Hammer boost" you can give a nitro powerup at the start so you accelerate faster.

But just keep it simple.

I have to agree with the no button mashing sentiment. I can't stand it when games force me to do that.

I don't see any issue with have a boost system similar to RC.. the amount of boost based on your timing of pressing accelerate. There shouldn't need to be any more visual cues than the jet exhaust blasting. That would propel a car forward without anything else. No burning rubber.
