[LOGGED] Weird texture draw distance (when Shadow Quality is Low)

Postby potterman28wxcv » Thu Dec 10, 2015 6:33 pm

This can be seen here.
(the road gets rendered as i drive.. a bit weird)

I don't remember seeing something like that in 1.0.2 . Anyone experiencing the same ?
No idea if it's a bug or a new feature to have a more consistent framerate :P

EDIT : It seems that it's because of Shadow Quality. When switching it to Low, it decreases the texture draw distance.

What settings are you running on? I'm running everything on max and I can see -some- popup but not as bad as that.

... Though why the main path is a separate mesh from the world geometry is beyond me. xD.

Look at the road-holding on these babies. Clarkson would cream himself. :ugeek:

Broscar, your car skin is called Tropical. ; )

I'm running with everything low but textures and motion blur on ultra, since it's not supposed to take that many FPS.
Wait, going to test with textures on low. Might be a performance issue afterall.

EDIT : nope, same issue. No matter whether i'm recording or not, or the quality of the texture.
I know I have a not-that-performant hard drive, so it might have to do with this.

Though, I have no idea why this problem appears with this particular patch..

I assume they tweaked the draw distances/lod ranges, 'cause the pop-in is a little more noticeable on my end as well.
It's not nearly as bad as in your video though. I think that's just flat-out broken in some way :s

Edit: Yep, they definitely lowered the draw distance. Pretty noticeable on Playground.

Hmm, this is odd because I didn't touch the culling distance of meshes in Industrial.

Will look into it

It becomes a lot more apparent with the trees

https://youtu.be/OEMjCPfyCq0?t=5s

I can't even see the trees when I take that jump, leading me to believe there are no trees at all.
What is strange is that only the trees are affected, the canes and fireworks are not.

I'm sure it's the same kind of issue of the one I noticed on the Industrial track.
Not everyone is experiencing this though, so maybe UE4 automatically determines the draw distance automatically.

As my laptop is not a gaming one, maybe it's set on low or something.

Yeah I think it's doing that to save your PC from exploding, Potty. What are your specs again?

I'm running Christmas Arena at a steady 60 fps.. Why would it dynamically make the textures disappear to save performance when i'm running it just nicely ?

As you can see here, I can make the trees disappear and reappear again by moving back and forth. This makes the draw distance to be slightly lower than the distance between the wood trunks and the trees.

But maybe when I'm playing without OBS the draw distance increases ? It would be logical, if we assume that it's adjusted compared to how much your computer struggles.

So here is what I did. I played Arena once again, without OBS (so no recording). I found back the initial location i was in my previous run (big thanks to snowman and the center tree for indicating me the way :D ), and by moving back and forth, I noticed the same exact draw distance.

Which is why I'm quite sure (unless I'm missing something) that it's a static parameter, something that does not vary depending on the CPU usage.

EDIT : I found out what it is. Shadow quality. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2SUcv9B6Tg
When you turn Shadow Quality on Low, it drastically decreases the draw distance.

I guess your textures got stuck under the shadow.

UE4 must group shadows and mesh draw distance together. We'll see if we can split them up
