when it comes to speed shouldn't all cars in a race have the same top speed, its how you get there that matters

I'm pretty sure that all cars flat out were the same speed. Its about how you took corners and acceleration that were he driving challenges.

You are indeed completely wrong.
The cars in Rollcage had a different top speed - Lenny and Ria being the fastest (Ria having more acceleration but less strength than Lenny).

Under turbo the cars did all have the same top speed though, which is why Jet wins or dies by how many turbo pads are on a track. :(

Edit: also, sorry to be a douche bag, but the mach number is proportionate to the square of the temperature (in Kelvin), meaning you'd reach it easier (since lower) on Norvos than Jahtra:

Ok, here goes. Let's say Norvos is in many respects similar to earth (gravity, air density etc...), except we assume it's -20°C, or 253 in Kelvin. This means speed of sound is 319m/s in these conditions.

With TheOnly's first attempt at 1125km/h, he reached 312,5m/s, shy of the speed of sound
HOWEVER
in his 2nd attempt at 1219km/h, this is 338,6m/s folks!

TheOnly is the first true supersonic gaming car racer !! Incidentally, GRIP could be the first car game to emulate it ;)
IMAGINE THE ADVERTISEMENT out of that!!

For devs to implement the bang (rounded at the lowest integer) :mrgreen:
  • Norvos at -20°C means bang at 1148km/h
  • Liddo at, say 20°C, means bang at 1235km/h
  • Jahtra at, say 40°C means bang at 1277km/h (good luck reaching that)
Then, there's altitude (pressure), if Industrial was on a high plateau or something (less than 1 "earth" atmosphere), speed of sound would be lower (reachable)... but I'm done here :ugeek:

Given the air pressure on Norvos, Jahtra, etc. are 1 atm, we would probably start seeing transonic effects at speeds lower than supersonic. certain areas around the car would be moving supersonically before the car itself is so the body of the car would start getting buffetted by shockwaves at around 1000kph (guesszing). This all depends on the aerodynamics of the car, and seeing that the cars are nearly blunt bodies, that transonic shuddering would be brutal.

On that topic, the treads of the tires on the top sides would be supersonic at merely 600kph. Man would these things be loud! They'd basically be giant shockwave generators.

We'll be putting in light trails at some point but it could be cool to have jetstream type trails as well.

One thing about speed though, is that although the car is physically going that fast in the game, many people perceive it as slower because the scale of the car is like 3-4 times bigger than a normal one, and therefore how fast it's going doesn't sync up with the speedometer. I happen to think this as well, which means maybe lowering the overall speedometer speed to 2/3 of what it is might be a good idea.

That said, we can still throw in a sonic boom achievement later, if someone hits 1000 kmph

Well, I find this a bit sad :?

Why watering down Rob's achievement ?
Cars do drive at those insane speeds (on wild speed with some skills btw), let it show !! It's a testament to Rob's tears and blood shed on physics. I'm totally against hiding it.

It's also part of GRIP's IP by now. Going at Nascar' or Collin Mcrae speed... I mean... meh, what a let down. :oops:

It's the other way round, why not reinforcing the sense of massive scale (e.g. adding tiny humanoid shapes running between cars right before the race - the mechanics or something) ?

Yeah. Or a banana for scale. It would really help the immersion and understanding of the difference. But please do not tinker with the speedometer, let it show on what velocity are we racing at for real.
