Some Rollcage/Grip vehicle fanart! Feedback welcome

Postby mp4yne » Sun Dec 06, 2015 3:00 pm

Hi guys,
I am Rahul, a concept artist from India [Here's some of my work: http://www.rahulphilip.com]. Have been a huge Rollcage fan for years and now I am super excited for GRIP [very inspired by concepts from Joe Sutton!] Got a really bad machine right now that barely plays Grip at its lowest setting, so at least I can do some fun concepts of cars that I would really like to see in GRIP ;)
Pls let me know your picks, why you like them, and any feedback you might have; these are just sketches at this point, just exploring different options: design language, arrangement of tyres, exhausts, etc.. Thanks to Chris for the really cool idea for [R-4]! Any type of constructive feedback is highly welcome, both in terms of aesthetics and function. Feel free to be completely honest, I'll try to incorporate your suggestions into these and maybe come up with at least one decent car.
And if you have any other crazy concept ideas for cars [specially to make them feel alien] and you want me to give those a try, it'd be awesome! For instance, these can be : some crazy tyres you saw or thought of, cool rim ideas, some kind of abstract shape that would work great as windows up top, or simply ideas for different tyre arrangements that would work in-game. I would credit you for those ideas of course :)

Thanks! Here we go, some prelim designs. Most of these have vertical symmetry for the flips, while a few features are unique to one major side. The human scale is approximate at this point.

I love the R-2 concept, it looks like it has great aerodynamics and has a cool design, looks pretty sporty too.
I liked R-5 too, could be interesting with double backwheels.
You're just a voice pal.

I love R-2 and R-5, and kinda have a soft spot for R-4.
It reminds me of a game called lego drome racers (anyone?)

But I think R-5 looks too fat for a sporty or fast look.
I think it looks better in the rough polygon models than the paintover.

But I love the light-weight look of the R-2.

Could you try keeping most of the R-2 and place the rear exhaust and the wheels of the R-5 on there?
Might get the lightweight and fast look I would love from it.

R-2 and R-5 are my faves, too. R-3 might be good without the back side wheels so it was just a three wheeler with two in the front and one in the back.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys, I'll use R2+ some components of others you have selected.
This is a side experiment trying to make these cars look more "alien". Accordion shaped tyres that have some sort of advanced grip technology [lets figure that our later :P] I'll keep posting these small experiments as I dont want to fall into the trap of doing generic cars. The thumbnail is just supposed to give you an idea of the structure.
Feedback pls :)

Edit:: Removed the thumbnail as it was really confusing.

Wait, is the side with the center-wheel the front or the back? With four wheels PLUS the fifth the fifth looks kinda like it was just bolted on to the front. I really do think it'd look better as a three-wheeler a la the T-Rex (http://i.imgur.com/p7z1VmC.jpg), but if you're dead-set on five, maybe try aligning/reducing the offset them so it's 2 in the front, 3 in the back rather than 2 in the front, 2 in the middle, and 1 in the back.

Thanks! Ah, my bad. the extra wheel is in the front for steer, alongwith the other two front tyres. In the thumbnail it kinda seems like its bolted on, yeah, its not really accurate at this point. I will try the T rex style 3 wheeler though, I just feel like it might seem a bit flimsy when crashing against cars.

Actually, the more I look at R-4, the more I like it. That's kind of what I was getting at with the suggestions I was making for R-5, just with a slimmer rear.

Hey guys! Hope everyone had fun holidays :)
sorry for the delays, have been really busy with work and assignments. This time I wanted to explore some methods to do environments for Grip. Need to put more thinking into the design, and creating unique environments though.
