Name that car

Postby Chris_CE » Fri Jan 22, 2016 9:55 am

After I saw this post by Roq...

Roq wrote:Can NOT wait! Do you guys have names lined up for these yet?

...I figured you guys would like a chance at naming the cars and classes as well.

So, currently there are two cars to name, who are made by the same manufacturer. We need names for:

  • Manufacturer (you can see their emblem on the rear of my car)
  • Current ingame vehicle
  • Tank vehicle

Once more cars are being announced, we can start naming them as well as the manufacturer.

There's also the naming of the car classes/tiers, of which there will be three (not four). So it's:

  • Speedster (?) -- Smallest, highest accel, lowest top speed
  • Predator (?) -- Middle
  • Tank/Dominator (?)-- Biggest, lowest accel, highest top speed

Then again, these suggested names for tiers could instead be used as car names (Dominator or Predator, for instance)

I kind of think the current tank car should be "Rhino" or something as when it reaches top speed it'll smash everything out the way! i'm going to enjoy seeing the names people can come up with :)

Names off the top of my head:

Tanks:

Bulwark
Barricade
Aegis
Torus
Barrage

Speedsters: (somewhat elemental in nature):

Firebrand
Tornado
Thunderclap
Tsunami
The Fusion
Scimitar

Predators: (what else? Beasts!)

Tarantula
VenomStrike
Warthog
Lioness
The Lockjaw
Constrictor
Hammerhead

The manufacturer we've seen so far seems very much about form over function. Thus I image the names would also reflect this. So i envisage a numerical designation after (or before?) a more conventional name - e.g. the Torus DM-MK-1 for the first tier, lowest engine setting bracket. DM in this case = Dominator class. So The Lockjaw-PD-MK3 would be the top tier predator and so on.

As for the manufacturer name, I gather these things are actually illegal?? Are they built by underground groups that customize construction machinery or build them from scratch? Are they powered by a legitimate manufacturers engine/power supply normally used in space travel? these things could play heavily in to the naming. So you could have the sleeker designs using an engine made by 'Hooch Flambough Designs' (trying to go for a Rolls Royce sounding high class engine name). Where as the cars we have now look more like a 'Gyro Autonomic Industrial Products - or G.R.I.P'. :P

First, thank you Chris for asking our feedback to THAT extent.
My take:
  • Raptor (for the smallest tier - gives the sheer notion of savagery to me!)
    • ***car to come***/Smuggler MK1/Impaler/Swift
    • ***car to come***
    • ***car to come***/燃えるフライ(blazing fly) -japanese here, or why not totally alien glyphs?
  • Predator (sounds cool for overall polyvalence, just like the, well, predator)
    • Barricade (+1)/Enforcer
    • ***car to come***
    • ***car to come***苦しめる (torment)
  • Dominator (is cool, or Juggernaut though it doesn't end in "or". "Terminator" perhaps?)
    • Rhino (+1)/Rhino MK5/Leviathan/Juggernaut/
    • ***car to come***
    • ***car to come***/殺害獣 (killing beast)/岩の山 (rock mountain)
Somehow I think it'd be cool to pay tribute to RC in the manufacturers' names (using Leon, Ria, Lenny, Tony or Yuri - though he might already be running Jahtra I heard - that became underground racing legends back in the days and started building and selling cars?)

The manufacturer for the current two cars is the same, right? They seem like a kinda bulky, heavyweight company for the most part. Gives it a kind of space-American feel. Maybe something like "Rytek Heavy Industries" for the brand?

As for the cars, the current one could be something like "Patriot" or, like Queadah said, "Enforcer."

As for the tank, something like "Behemoth" or "Leviathan," something reminiscent of an ancient beast.

It'd be cool if we could get a company that used medieval/fantasy-themed names so we could have stuff like "Archer," "Paladin," "Knight," or "Rogue" all under one manufacturer.

Great names guys, thanks for the suggestions.

We'll be needing these once we have a proper car selection menu, but if you want to post more in the meantime, by all means!

I'm from the UK, but could we get some of these names in a different language? They wouldn't all be English. As Queadah mentions, some of these cars would look perfect with a Japanese type-face on them like some of the concept art. Maybe the tire manufacturer is owned by an Asian conglomerate and different cars have different tire names too.

Theese are all good tbh, but my recommendations are for company names:
Varrien Engineering: Sport looking, vents everywhere, symmetry not a concern
Quazar Enterprises: Out of this world, asymmetrical orientated, Alien looking
Lodrin Manufacturing: Battle, heavy orientated design. Big armor, big boosters
Karin corp: Straight to the point, no fancy names just ease of naming, perfectly symmetric and practical (I think i herd of this somewhere tho)

Some car names:

Heavy:
Blood hound (BLD-HND)
Nemisis (STARRRS)
Thock (THK)
Vorrack (V0R-RK)
Anubis (BORK)
Medium:
Jackal (JKL)
Equalizer (EQL-ZR)
Probe (PRB)
Flair (FLA-R)
Bullet (BLT-YUMM)
Light:
Jack knife (JAK-KNF)
Windsor (WND-ZR)
Runner (RNR)
Recon (RE-CN)
Shadow (SH4-D0)

I'm all for pulling mythology stuff into it. We could start using the names of ancient, legendary weapons, too - Durandal, Gungnir, Airgetlamh, Ichaival, Kavacha, all sorts of stuff.

I really like Bulwark. Made me think of a big player manufacturer of the 'Tanks' immediately.
"Bulwarks", "Bulwerks", "Bulwerke", "Bulwörks", ... anything along those lines. Heh maybe it's just the way I'm pronuncing it I don't know,..

Roq wrote:

Why did I think of a german manufacturer with a name like "Kriegsschiffe" or "Autobahn" immediately ? ^^
There even would be some german names/words I could think of but oh well I'd understand if people wouldn't wanna see them as most people won't know how to pronunce them,... and that's really kind of the point with all these harsh 'Rammstein-ish' words... aand again aside from knowing what they even mean hehe.
Though there has been talk about... let me call it a gallery, where you can check out the individual manufactures and cars, with some back informations anyways, hasn't it ? Translation of the name if it's anything alien or not english, some kind of spec sheet, ... and what not. I'm sure a lot of people would be game for that...

And just because I'm in on it now already let me throw you some of Rammstein-ish words I mentioned earlier.

Krieg - just means "war"
Tarn/Tarnkappe/Tarnfeld - depending on the context it means "stealth, camouflage, disguise"
Chirurg - Surgeon, ... Surgeon itself actually sounds cool too...
Blitz/Donner/Donnerkeil - Not not "Blitzkrieg"...; "lightning, thunder, thunderbolt"
Scharfschütze - "sniper", wordingly translated it means "sharp-marksman"
Tod/Gott - "death/god"
Noetik - "noetics"; simply because it's a freaking cool word and barely anybody know it means,
No-Ethic has a completely different meanin but would be cool too

this list would become way too long if I'd continue now....
