I'm gonna throw my hat in the ring again and suggest star- or constellation-themed names. Vega, Cassiopeia, Gemini, Canopus, Antares, that sort of stuff. Could be from the same manufacturer, and have all their cars named after stars, maybe.

All good stuff guys. The current car names are not final, and there's obviously more cars coming, so we'll reassess manufacturer and model names further down the line. I'll no doubt do a poll to find out the forum favourites

I think a good company name could be "Unity", maybe with more authoritarian sounding names for the vehicles, too. A few examples:

Unity Enforcer
Unity Pacifier
Unity Subjugator

Might be a slight problem with that - Unity was one of the manufacturers in Stage II. Good ol' Unity Genesis.

I like the idea, but a name other than " Unity " might be better.

So I thought I would put a little thought into some names for vehicles in the game. I tried to think of some names that are stylistically similar, because the vehicles are after all parts of the same universe, but also names that open up options for the narrative and the grander lore. Names homogeneous within that lore but also expansive enough to appeal to a wide audience of players, so that there's something for everyone.

I tried to think of names that reflect the vehicle class too. But here's what I came up with;

Terra - (earth based racing team financed by an alien conglomerate, or with technology based on alien tech) Stylistically the designs are boxy and heavy but also they are high powered legacy vehicles. This team will have human drivers exclusively honouring the fact that it was the first to appear in the game. Vehicle names are;
- Dynamo (speeder)
- Dominator (mid)
- Dreadnought (tank)

Vintek - (another earth based team, drivers however are human and alien) Stylistically the vehicles are a throw back to drivings long history on earth. Names take inspiration from the cars that (seemingly) inspired them, so;
- F1X (mr green in the concept art, formula one inspired)
- GT (aka ford GT, mr blue or current Warmonger)
- DB9K (this is a little less clever but aka the DB9, only it is the 9000, get it? ....haha anyway)

Cygon - (I see this team as alien, vehicles aren't driven by human or alien drivers though, rather they are a unified A.I) Stylistically vehicles are inspired by robotics or cyborgs;
- Cypher
- Vortex
- Vector

Outworld - (origin is unspecified, racers are alien - and this is a bit of a shout out to RC) Stylistically vehicles are badass monstrosities. Names of the vehicles are unpronounceable by humans however, in the GRIP Leagues they have become known as;
- Raptor
- Predator
- Mamoth

Stellarus - (mixed origin, perhaps Orbital Prime though to have an echo to that planet - drivers are humanoid aliens) Stylistically vehicles represent the best of the best. Best tech. Best design. They are sleek, streamline and 'shiny'. I've seen at least one concept that fits the bill :) Vehicle names are;
- Gravity
- Apex
- Triumph

United - To try and have something for younger players (and shout out to Unity) I was thinking a team that stylistically could harken to/be inspired by, anime. The team would be human with Japanese drivers. Something light hearted and fun, so;
- flip
- skid
- grind

That can cover the initial release of the game and then well, go wiled for the DLC :P

Younger players? You mean since Animes are just such a new thing? ;)

What Animes or what designs are you thinking about?

Something like this?

Round shapes could be a nice contrast to the other designs. Like those fellas:

(Of course not EXACTLY like the Tachikoma, that would be silly.)

Nice Ideas :)

Thanks! yeah that third picture is right on the money :)

I don't necessarily think the inspiration has to be grounded in anime to appeal to younger players, but only that it would be cool to have a younger and less hardcore team in the game. Stylistically the inspiration could come from anywhere really. Anime just has a lot of cool ideas :)

I love the anime but i dont think the name has the right "anime" ring to it. Its to direct and to indirekt at the same time. But if the cars fit to the name im ok with it ... 8-)

But i agree, the names could be a bit more japanese. How about:

Neo-HachiRoku (AE86 ...)

Tokai Model 90 or Tokai GT (like in Tokai industries in Blame or the Tokai industrial region in real japan)

Bosozoku ("running-out-of-control (as of a vehicle) tribe" jap. tuning and race sub-culture like the gangs in Akira)

K4m1K423 (leet)

Given that the two of the classes have pretty much solidified their names within the community (Tank and Speeder), this leaves just the medium class name to think about.

Previously I suggested "Hybrid", which is... well, kind of lame, because nowadays you'll be thinking more about electric powered cars, rather than hybrid as in between light and heavy range. That got me thinking, what name in the car industry refers to something that is versatile, so that it has a supercar levels of performance and looks but also is actually usable. That left me with... GT (aka Grand Tourer).

And no, I'm not coming with this up just because a certain show with certain 3 blokes in it have went live, I was actually thinking about this for a while, just couldn't be bothered to move my ass to post this, which now makes me look like an unimaginative prick. Oh well, price to pay for laziness I suppose xD

Anyway, back to the subject. GT cars are essentially just a tad bit below the supercar performance usually, at least in terms of cornering prowess. That is fixed with a lot of straight line speed though, for example Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, Aston Martin Vanquish, SRT Viper, Jaguar XKRS etc. So far fits perfectly with the performance level of the middle class, as in heavier than speeder, with worse cornering but better top speed but not as heavy or top speed oriented as the tanks (which in motoring world would most likely be the Super Estates).
The whole mentality around the GT cars also helps with getting the point about the class across, since those cars are generally treated as cars for long journeys, not for posting times on tracks etc. And obviously it's a very catchy name.

It would look nice when put with the other classes as well: Speeder, GT, Tank. Although I do expect some jokes about it meaning "Grand Tank" xD

Hmmm... my personal bias against that Toyota makes me kind of not like that particular version of that idea but... Neo-Skyline... yes, me gusta :D

For the medium class, I'm throwing:
  • regular
  • mid-size
  • roadster
  • supercar (or just "super")
  • original
  • MW (for MiddleWeight)
No lore explanation intended, except for my last proposal that I think is the less ridicule because it's also a division in martial arts (in ref. to MMA):
  • meaning GRIP cars are so buff they're ranked based on their weight/teeth they can throw in a fight ;)
    like, Speeders < 300 tons < MiddleWeights < 500 tons < Tanks (whatever the actual game numbers)
Would make sense to me. Plus you get to have a "MiddleWeight" champion if global leaderboard has the option to sort by class :lol:

Queadah wrote:[*]supercar (or just "super")

This is the only one that doesn't fit the class from your ideas (roadster implies the car is a cabriolet, but nvm xD ). Rest are not great but definitely fitting.

Supercars are generally meant to be light, performance focused, rather than tough and versatile. The most iconic supercar of all time is most likely Ferrari F40, which is basically a go-kart with a twin turbo V8. That car is extremely light for its size. In short, supercar would be perfect for the Speeder class but at the same time those cars are effectively highly mobile jet tanks anyway so calling them cars is a bit... pointless xD

Then there's the "super" part. It would be perfect for a class that is superior to all the others in all ways, as that's basically what super means, level higher than standard. Granted, my proposition suffers a bit from a similar issue when seen as "Grand Tank" rather than "Grand Tourer".

The problem with coming up with a good sounding name for a middle class is that it has to describe the fact it's a highly versatile class. It doesn't excel in anything but it doesn't suck in anything as well. And I can't imagine calling the middle class "versatile" would be in any way seen as... cool. And anything that at least I can think of now and everything I've seen here so far implies that this class is "better" than the others, rather than in the middle of them (aka "Come here if you want OP cars"). Naturally that excludes those that just don't have the cool ring to them (which I admit, that includes my first proposition definitely).
It would also be nice if the name was with the theme of the other class names, aka Speeder and Tank. Both have that motoring feel to them, which would be nice to keep.

Also, how about "Genesis"? A bit of a homage towards the RC2 (which for those that played is the "OP sign", I admit) and also can be seen as the origin of something, aka balanced, not specialised. Although I'm pretty sure this won't go through even if we like it.
