Graphics Card recommendations ?

Postby maniamaster » Wed Nov 23, 2016 3:45 am

Hi all, so my dust-old amd hd 6950 is about to break down (black artifacts) and I'm itching for a replacement for a while now.
I wanted to ask for your recommendations.

I mostly play Grip and Overwatch, both at 1680x1050 (so far, an upgrade to 1080p would be reasonable). Managed to squeeze out about 40 fps on overwatch and about 30-40 (tanking at times) in Grip. I'd very much like stable 60++ fps in both of these.

My whole specs are as follows:

Processor: Core i7 2500K @ 3.4 Ghz , Sandy Bridge (native)
GPU: AMD 6950 HD 2gb.
Mainboard: Asus P8P67
16GB ddr3 ram
power supply: 530W be quiet! Pure Power
storage: 1 tb SSD

I was eyeing for a gtx 1060 (218€ for 3gb, ~270€ for 6 gb) or even the 1070 (400-500€) (probably an overkill, as I don't usually play the very demanding high end games as Battlefield).
However I rarely buy a new graphics card, so I'd like to prepare for the future aswell (Prob. 4 Years).

I guess anything at this point will be a substantial upgrade.

Thank you for your suggestions!

I bought 1060 recently and I have been very happy with it. I also considered RX 480 8gb but the price was so close to 1060 I ended up with that. I think it has good price/performance balance (I know cheaper cards have more "bang for the buck" but considering you can play pretty much everything Ultra@1080 with it, and you get peace of mind since you don't have to fiddle with settings all the time). GRIP runs most of the time 60-70fps (I never have seen it to drop below 60) at 1080p on my rig (i5-4670 @ 3.4ghz, 1060 and 8g ram) and I think the optimisation of the game will get better with future updates. Your other specs seem to be in order, so I'd say the 1060 would be a very good decision for you and will give a quite long extension to your rig's lifetime. But if you have too much money in your hands go for the 1070 that's even more futureproof :)

I'm still running my gtx 480 and planning to upgrade to a 1060 in a couple of months. Hopefully it won't be too out-of-date by then.

As far as Grip is concerned the 1060 is more then enough. I also plan on buying that card later looks like a perfect midrange upgrade card. I dont think the 1070 is worth the money. Its almost double the cost but not even closely that much extra in power.

Go for the 1060 but please pick the 6 GB version. If I recall correctly the 3gb version has more cores deactivated and 3 GB will probably not be enough soon.
